Stomach Cramps at Any Time, Indigestion, Stomach Problems - Sattu Can Be a Dietary Remedy! What Does It Contain?
Stomach problems are common in many households. Sometimes there is pain due to stomach cramps, and sometimes there are problems with bowel movements. Can eating sattu regularly solve such problems?
Stomach cramps at any time! Is there no specific time for bowel movements? There may be irritable bowel syndrome or IBS. In a country like India, such stomach problems are extremely common.
Doctors say that there can be many causes behind stomach problems or IBS. It may be due to genetic reasons, as well as excessive mental stress or problems with the diet.
The symptoms of IBS include digestive problems, bloating, stomach cramps, and a frequent urge to have a bowel movement.
Doctors say that foods containing excessive oil and spices, milk or dairy products, fried foods, and highly processed foods can increase these problems. At the same time, some foods may also help reduce IBS symptoms.
Could sattu or a drink made with sattu be included in that list?
Sattu is made by roasting gram in a dry pan and grinding the roasted gram or gram dal into powder. 100 grams of sattu contains 20.6% protein, 7.2% fat, 1.35% fibre, and 65.2% carbohydrates.
Dr. Rajesh Kumar, a doctor at a private hospital in Haryana, says that sattu contains soluble fibre and resistant starch. The fibre present in it is comparatively easy to digest, so the stomach does not feel full quickly. Sattu is particularly good for those who have constipation or do not feel that their bowels are clearing properly. After reaching the intestine, sattu absorbs water and turns into a gel-like substance, which helps clean the bowel. It is particularly beneficial for those who experience difficulty or pain during bowel movements.
Nutritional Properties and Benefits of Sattu
Easy to digest: Compared with ordinary dal or raw gram flour, sattu is lighter and much more tolerable for the stomach.
Reduces constipation and bloating: The fibre in sattu absorbs water in the intestine and helps soften the stool. As a result, when constipation is present, it helps clear the bowel and may reduce the tendency for sudden stomach cramps.
Keeps the intestines healthy: The components present in sattu provide nourishment to beneficial bacteria in the intestine, which may help reduce inflammation or irritation inside the intestine.
Helps maintain electrolyte balance: Sattu contains minerals such as potassium and magnesium. Therefore, drinking sattu can help maintain the mineral levels in the body. These two minerals can also help reduce stomach discomfort caused by eating foods containing excess sodium or salt.
How Should IBS Patients Consume Sattu?
It is better not to eat sattu as paratha or as a thick mixture. This may cause digestive problems. To get its benefits, mix 1–2 teaspoons of sattu with water at room temperature or slightly warm water and have it as a thin drink. If you can tolerate lemon, add a little lemon juice and rock salt according to taste. Adding a little roasted cumin powder to the drink will make it taste better and may also help digestion. You can start the day with one glass of sattu drink. However, it is better not to consume it at night.
Sattu is undoubtedly good for the stomach. However, it is not an acceptable medicine for stomach diseases. Sattu can be a homemade dietary remedy.
If you are suffering from IBS-related problems, it is important to consult a doctor.
